Bringing together the right people led to free maternal and infant healthcare in Sierra Leone which, since its implementation has:
👉 Reduced infant mortality by a fifth in its first year of operation
👉 More than doubled the number of pregnant women taking anti-malarial precautions in four years
👉 Increased the proportion of children who turned one fully vaccinated from 2/5 to over 2/3 in four years

In 2008, Sierra Leone was the worst place in the world to give birth, with the world's highest rate of infant and maternal mortality. User fees for health care was a major barrier to accessing health care.
At a meeting hosted at Wilton Park, Robert Yates - then Senior Health Advisor at the 🇬🇧 Department for International Development - highlighted the potential of free health services for pregnant women and children. A fellow participant, Sierra Leone's Minister for Health and Sanitation, invited Robert Yates to Sierra Leone to speak to senior health officials. Over the next 18 months, the Sierra Leone government worked with development agencies to remove fees for those accessing maternal and infant healthcare. The Free Healthcare Initiative, modelled on discussions at Wilton Park, was launched in April 2010 and has saved thousands of lives.

Since 1951, we have called Steyning in West Sussex our home. Our guests have long appreciated Wilton Park’s rural setting at the historic Wiston House with the ancient village of Steyning nearby. Such surroundings have often been part of our success, providing important moments of calm while wrestling with some of the world’s most challenging problems.
Since the start of the lockdown, Wilton Park has become a virtual organisation and it will be many weeks until our guests are able to enjoy the surrounds of Wilton Park again. However, we are thrilled to be able to support organisations in our local area, especially our local care homes and hospices.
Over the coming weeks our chefs – working in shifts to maintain social distancing – will be in our kitchens, baking brownies, bread and cookies which will be delivered to some of those who need it the most. We have been part of this community for nearly 70 years and we are delighted to be supporting these organisations during these enormously challenging times.
