To coincide with Refugee Week, the London Catholic Worker will be holding a vigil outside the Home Office. All are warmly invited to join the LCW in a vigil of liturgy, prayers, shared stories, poetry and music.

During the week when we celebrate the positive contribution made to society by refugees, we wish to show solidarity with all those men, women and children who, arriving on our shores in search of a better life, suffer from destitution, indignity and imprisonment everyday at the hands of our unjust immigration system.

As we challenge the cultures of fear, prejudice, self-interest and scapegoating of immigrants prevalent within today's society, we call on the government to have a change of heart and extend a true welcome to strangers in need, offering human dignity. These are our brothers and sisters in whom the Church has always recognised the persecuted face of Christ

Even though anarchism is nearly always anticlerical and frequently atheistic, the intersection of religion and anarchism is more complex than is often assumed. The aim of this workshop is to map out and discuss the literature on religion and anarchism by considering four main types: classic anarchist quarrels with religion and its institutions; anarchist interpretations of founding religious scriptures and figures; anarchist “theology”; and historical studies on specific religious anarchist thinkers, communities and movements. The workshop is led by Alexandre Christoyannopoulos, author of Christian Anarchism: A Political Commentary on the Gospel, and editor of two books on anarchism and religion.

The workshop will take place at 1pm in room LFG in the Learning Centre.

AntiUniversity Now - Non-Violent Direct Action Training: Monday 12th June 3 to 6pm at Giuseppe Conlon House 49 Mattison Road London.

As part of the AntiUniversity Now festival we are organising a Non-Violent Direct Action Training. The training explores questions such as "what is violence?" and "what is non-violent resistance?" through group exercises and discussion. The workshop will be led by anti-war activists and members of the London Catholic Worker, a Christian anarchist and pacifist community. People of all backgrounds are invited to participate and share their own ideas and experiences. The aim is to learn from each other and build awareness and understanding of different perspectives on non-violence which can strengthen solidarity and cooperation between different groups and movements.

To book a place, please email londoncatholicworker@yahoo.co.uk or use eventbrite. You may also wish to check out the facebook page.

Since 2014 we hold a monthly prayer vigil outside the Foreign Office and the Home Office, remembering the men, women and children who have died on their journeys to Europe and praying for all migrants and refugees around the world. On 20th June, to celebrate Refugee Week, we will hold a special vigil at The Home Office with a short Christian liturgy including a litany of recent migrant deaths on Europe's borders and prayers of intercession, as well as music, poetry and reflections

We're planning to protest at DSEi19 January 2017

In September 2017 the London Catholic Worker will join other groups organising to STOP DSEI, one of the biggest arms fairs in the world taking place at the Excel centre in London.

Join us at Giuseppe Conlon House on Thursday 2nd February 6.30 to 8.30pm to learn more about DSEI, hear about and see pictures from past protests and direct action, and find out what you can do to help put an end to DSEI.

In 2015, the London Catholic Worker took part in a "No Faith in War" day of action together with Put Down The Sword, Pax Christi and Disarm Quakers outside the Excel centre. The day was part of a week of action to disrupt the setup of DSEI. We used symbols of our faith to claim and occupy a space and nonviolently resist the arms fair. We held a prayer service, a Quaker meeting of worship and a mock funeral for the victims of arms trade. Red paint, symbolising blood, was spilled across the road and people gathered around a white coffin singing hymns. Together we were able to block both entrances to the Excel centre for nearly four hours and several armoured vehicles were turned away!

No faith in Trident29 June 2016

On Monday 27th June, the London Catholic Worker joined other faith groups and individuals at the Atomic Weapons Establishment sight in Burghfield, near Reading. The day was named No Faith in Trident and was part of the Trident Ploughshare month of Action in June.

Throughout the month of June demonstrations have been carried out at AWE Burghfield, around the factory where the United Kingdoms weapons of mass destruction are constructed. Various groups have carried out direct actions around the base in protest at this countries policy of mutually assured destruction and to increase pressure on our politicians this year as the Government decides whether to replace Trident or instead to proceed without this genocidal capacity and to invest our funds elsewhere instead.

At approximately 06:30 on Monday morning 3 groups blockaded the 3 entrances of AWE Burghfield using a combination of lock-on tubes and super glue. Put Down the Sword blockaded the North entrance to the Mearings (the road leading to the front entrance of the bomb factory), the London Catholic Workers blockaded the South entrance to the Mearings and a group of Quakers blockaded the Construction Gate (where materials are delivered to build preparations for the replacement to Trident, which has officially not been decided on yet).

For over an hour the entire site of the bomb factory was inaccessible to vehicles. The Southern entrance of the Mearings was cleared first. The police cut the blockaders out and removed them with no arrests. Following this the north entrance to the Mearings was cleared, 5 members of PDTS were arrested and then charged with obstruction of the highway. After over 6 hours the construction gate was cleared resulting in 3 arrests under military by-laws.

All 8 arrestees were released that evening and wait to see if the Crown Prosecution Service will require them to stand trial or drop the charges. Throughout the day, in addition to supporters present at each blockade site a vigil was held on the grass verge next to the north Mearings entrance. Over 50 people gathered in support of those blockading and in opposition to the work of the factory. We were led in prayer, songs, workshops and reflections by the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Christian CND, Pax Christi, Quakers, Anglican Peace Fellowship, Christian Peacemaker Teams, Wake Up and the London Catholic Workers.

Thank you to all our supporters, including the Catholic Worker Farm, Green and Black Cross and the Quakers of Reading for taking such good care of us. The final day of the June action is Thursday 30th June, starting at 7am. We are encouraged to wear red to tie in the threat of Climate Change to the threat of Nuclear Weapons, and the waste of money, time and imagination involved when Climate Change mitigation and adaptation must be a new priority.

Peace Prayers at the UK's Nuclear Weapons Factory 23 June 2016

On Monday 27th June faith groups from across the UK will gather at Burghfield Atomic Weapons Establishment near Reading for a day of prayer, witness and non-violent direct action.

This inter-faith day is part of a month of daily direct action against Trident renewal called by Trident Ploughshares. Groups participating include London Catholic Worker, Pax Christi, Fellowship of Reconciliation, Wake Up, Quakers, Christian Peacemaker Teams, The Catholic Worker Farm, Anglican Pacifist Fellowship and Christian Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. We invite groups and individuals of all faiths to join us in praying for peace and declaring “No Faith in Trident!”

Please contact us directly for more information or to get involved. The programme is as at the bottom of this post.

Getting there: The event will take place at the junction of Reading Road/Burghfield Road and the north end of The Mearings RG30. Follow this link for maps and pictures. There are buses (Lime 2/2A) from Reading to “The Mearings” (ca. 25 minutes)

Visit from John Dear23 March 2016

The London Catholic Worker, in collaboration with Ekklesia, is very proud to be hosting a talk from internationally renowned preacher and activist, Fr. John Dear.

John Dear is an internationally known voice for peace and nonviolence. A long time activist, popular lecturer, and movement organizer, John is the author of 30 books and hundreds of articles, including “Living Peace,” “Jesus the Rebel,” and “The Nonviolent Life.” He was recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

"Our task, in these dark times, is simple: to speak the truth, resist war and injustice, practice nonviolence, walk with the poor, love everyone, say our prayers, and uphold the vision of a new world without war, poverty or nuclear weapons. We are called to follow the nonviolent Jesus on the road to peace. If we can be faithful to the God of peace and the Way of nonviolence, we will be greatly blessed."

In other news, here is our latest newsletter.

An update from the CW project in Calais, France22 February 2016

Calais in France is a French Sea port and city that links France with Britain by ferry and by the channel tunnel train. Refugees and migrants wanting to get to the UK from North-Africa, the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Kurdistan would mostly pass through Calais or one of its neighbouring harbours to go to the UK to ask for asylum. Britain is for many of them who already know some English or have friends, communities or relatives there the natural destination. As Britain keeps its borders closed for non-EU-nationals many refugees get stranded in the North of France waiting for a chance to cross the border to the UK. If they ask asylum or get registered in another EU country they lose their chance of asking asylum in the UK. With the “refugee crisis” in Europe the border controls have been tightened everywhere and it is estimated that about 6000 refugees are ‘stuck’ in the Calais area of the North of France. The last months the tensions have been rising all over Europe on refugees; and anti-immigrant sentiments have been agitated by politicians.

A small Catholic Worker house has been opened recently to be present amongst the refugees in Calais; this is in partnership with Caritas France, the Passionists UK, the London Catholic Worker and others.

Violence. The situation in the Calais ‘ghetto’ or the camp where refugees live is not getting better. As I spend more and more time meeting refugees, families and community leaders I am confronted with people living in fear of police violence in the camp (mainly teargas use at night even in the family area) and violence against refugees outside around the camp and in the city centre.

People actually feel safer inside the camp than outside and do not want to leave the camp alone anymore. While in the Dunkerq camp people feel very unsafe because of the presence of the human traffickers.

Two days ago on my way to the camp I talked with a young Afghan teenager who had been hit by somebody passing with a motorcycle. Although the French police apprehended 7 extremist this week that attacked refugees at night in the area of Calais, this comes late. The refugees feel strongly that some of the police are themselves behind the violence and refuse to protect them when they are attacked. Today three refugee residents of the camp are still missing; hospitals, jails, detention centres, families have been checked by charities and they haven't been found. One of the Afghan missing men is a father of two sons in Afghanistan, who keep on calling to people in the camp to know what happened to their father.

For the government this is "no-mans-land", these people do not matter. While the perimeter of the camp is surrounded by police to contain the refugees, refugees and charities have to organise like their own medical and ambulance services. Through court cases by charities/ngo some basic rights like really minimal sanitation has been forced.

Eviction. Last Friday the authorities have announced a ten day eviction notice and the demolishing of ‘half’ of the camp, this is actually the larger part where refugees live. The library, the school, the newly build youth centre, Saint Michaels Angel Orthodox Church and the small wooden shelters (also recently built!) of 2000 people will be destroyed. The authorities falsely claim only 800 people live in that zone. Everybody who has visited the camp knows differently. It is the most active part of the state sanctioned ghetto. But also the Ashram soup kitchen who daily feeds hundredes of people with a breakfast and a warm meal will be destroyed. Yesterday I spoke with Faith from the Ashram Kitchen and she is hopeless, because there is simply no place to move to and yet people will need warm food!

‘State sanctioned ghetto’: I use this term because the current jungle is the result of government policy and choises and not of refugees choices as some people think. While in March 2015 all other places spread around the Calais area and from the city of Calais were ‘cleared’ by the police of refugees, the refugees and charities working with refugees were only tolerated to ‘squat’ on this industrial wasteland; which is a toxic wasteland. Now the government ‘prefecture’ is going to use ‘squatting’ laws to evict the refugees they themself pushed there.

Personally I thought they actually would wait until late spring/summer to do this, not in winter, not with families with babies and children, not with all these teenagers…. It shows the inhuman face of government, the incapability of dealing with a refugee crisis that is not even so big of what is coming ahead of us if the war(s) don’t stop.

The politics of fear and racism have a price, a huge human price – my brothers and sisters in the jungle of Calais have walked/travelled already so many miles and suffered from war, danger, persecution, violence, poverty… to become victims of a greedy Europe? Yesterday I had a brief talk with a refugee from Aleppo in Syria, I guess he is not afraid of the French CRS, he must have seen worse in Syria – but does this ever stop for these people? My brothers in Christ, Hailé and Solomon, said they would stand with each other in peace – "they can come and hit them and kill them – but they will peacefully stand with each other." I guess they have been through enough already.

All are welcome to join this free public event. Yuichi Kamoshita and Sarasa Aihara are core members of the protest group against the new U.S. military base in Henoko, Okinawa, Japan. Daily protests, which normally attract over 200 people, are currently taking place outside 'Camp Schwab' with activists sitting in the road, forcibly being removed by riot police and being arrested for trying to stop the construction of the new airbase, which plans to landfill 160 hectares of Oura Bay.

A breathtakingly beautiful bay is a critical feeding ground for the Dugong (a type of manatee), sea turtles and home to a unique Porites cylindric coral community, enriched by fresh water plankton which lead into the bay from jungle rivers.

There are currently 32 U.S. bases on Okinawa, with the island extensively being used as a training ground for some 26,000 Marines, the total population of Okinawa is 1.4 million. The 24 Osprey helicopters take-off and landings are an acute disruption for local residents with a long track record of accidents which are covered-up by the U.S military.

Come and hear these young committed peace activists from Okinawa who are very much influenced by their Buddhist faith, as well as the history which shaped the current generation of Japan.

The Transform Now Plowshares is an effort by people of faith to transform nuclear weapons into real, life-giving alternatives, to build true peace.

Inspired by the prophets Micah and Isaiah, Jesus and Gandhi, the Transform Now Plowshares began a symbolic conversion of the Y-12 Highly-Enriched Uranium Manufacturing Facility in Oak Ridge TN on July 28, 2012. Consequently they faced trial and conviction for property damage and were sentenced in February of 2014 to 3 and 5 year sentences. An unprecedented appellate court ruling invalidated their sabotage conviction and they were released from prison this past May.

The following article recently appeared in Ekklesia. It was written by Henrietta Cullinan, a member of the LCW. More images of the DSEi protests can be found here.

国内ios如何使用youtubeLast Tuesday (8 September) I and other members of the London Catholic Worker took part in a "No Faith in War" day of action outside the Excel Centre, London. Faith groups Put Down the Sword, Pax Christi and Disarm Quakers were also coming together to disrupt the setting up of the DSEi, the world’s largest arms fair.

A week before, we went on a walking tour of the site, organised by CAAT, and inspected the important roundabout where deliveries of pieces of military hardware, such as tanks, helicopters and boats would be arriving, as well as everything else you need to set up an exhibition. We already had a plan to hold a mock funeral for the victims of the arms trade, but until the day came I had no idea whether the police would let us even approach the roundabout, or whether there would even be any trucks carrying recognisable military hardware.

The intention of an action like this one is to use the symbols of the church to convey the message of peace and disarmament. The idea was to claim and occupy a space in which to temporarily create and realise a peaceful and loving world at the same time as resisting nonviolently the arms trade, the approach of the lethal weapons of all sizes, the holding of the arms fair.

At the time the DSEi guest list hadn’t been released but, as we now know, amongst the regimes invited are those who use child soldiers, those that use violence against their own citizens. For me personally the aim is to resist the trade in killing. All the machines and weapons are evidence of someone’s intention to kill.

We considered ways of claiming and occupying the space, that are also symbols of the church: for instance the colours black and red, incense, placards, reading the word of God, singing hymns and then finally red paint that we were going to spread on the ground, to represent blood. We thought a bit about what kind of paint to throw, since throwing paint could be considered violent in itself. Oil paint would be too unpleasant. I thought of using vegetables like tomatoes and beetroot. In the end we used poster paint, mixing red and green for a realistic blood colour. Catholic Workers Nora Ziegler and I and John Lynes, a Quaker, who were willing to risk arrest, would throw the paint. John Lynes would only spill a small amount.

The funeral procession of small white coffin, flowers, candlesticks and placards set out at about 11am led by Fr. Martin Newell dressed in his plain dark habit, swinging the censor. We processed through the estate nearby, singing ‘Abide with me’ and ‘Amazing Grace’, handing out leaflets.

I prayed for the people of Afghanistan whose country had had so much ordnance dumped all over it that life has become almost impossible. In Kabul, whole blocks are still rubble, an infrastructure smashed, high unemployment persists. That morning we heard that Cameron had justified sending drones to make the first UK ‘extra-judicial’ killing. I prayed that Cameron would have a change of heart.

Then as the prayers finished I made eye contact with my friends, we picked up the coffin and moved onto the road. Quickly, with no one to stop us, we spilled the red poster paint all over one side of the road around the coffin. The nervousness suddenly left me. I knelt and in the gleaming wet paint. Other members of the crowd soon came to join us and held hands. The other people on the protest stood in a big circle around us as we carried on singing. The event turned from an awkward piece of activism into a space of prayer just as we had wished.

The police seemed reluctant to interrupt us at that point, instead mildly asking how long was all this going on for. We said we’d stay there an hour. The members of all the other groups gathered around, took over the singing, prayed in silence, as if in a prayer relay. We had made a gathering place, with the writing on the placards, the scripture that we read, the prayers and the incense still burning in front of the child’s coffin, and its smoke spilled out sideways in the wind.

Just as I’d imagined, the symbols and the crowd made a space of peace and prayer, instead of a road for carrying lethal weapons to market. Soon a row of lorries was stuck behind us. One low loader really was carrying an armoured vehicle, with the mountings for a missile launcher on the top. This felt like a real success to me.

Creating this space was taking prayers to the point of suffering. The Excel Centre tomorrow (15 September) becomes a place of suffering as companies display weapons to envoys of regimes looking for a way to kill and maim, subjugate and oppress.

In Kabul I shared in the daily life of the women’s community, cooking and cleaning, took part in workshops at the Borderfree Centre and went out to see the duvets being distributed to internally displaced families in a refugee camp and to day labourers. During our visit Mary Dobbing from Voices for Creative Nonviolence and Drone Wars UK delivered an international workshop on the UK use of drones for Afghan journalists and the APV. Drone experts joined us from UK by Skype: Chris Cole from Drone Wars UK, Chris Woods investigative journalist and author, and Jennifer Gibson an international human rights lawyer with Reprieve.

The purpose of the visit was to show solidarity with the peace activists in a war torn country, at the very time when the ISAF forces were pulling out of Afghanistan after thirteen years of war. I also wanted to be able to report back to friends in the UK on the terrible effects of war and intended to challenge the militarisation of our society, which assumes you can only visit Afghanistan with guards and guns.

Catholic Worker released from prison29 March 2014

Martin Newell is home, safe and well after his release from HMP Wandsworth yesterday, where he served 14 days of a 28 day sentence for nonpayment of fines all incurred as a result of acts of peaceful protest. He sends thismessage:

Thanks for all the cards, letters, messages of support and prayers.. My prayer isthat we will all deepen our commitment to work for peace and justice in God'sworld.

Catholic Priest Fr. Martin Newell , was sentenced to 28 days in prison fornon-payment of fines arising from numerous nonviolent peace protests against warand war preparations. Fr. Martin had told the court that for `for reasons of faith and conscience' hewould not pay fines of £565 that had been imposed following protests against thewars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as the UK's use of armed drones and Tridentnuclear weapons system. Fr. Newell said,

Jesus taught us to love not just our neighbours but also our enemies. He showed usby his life and example how to resist evil not with violence but with loving, persistent, firm, active non-violence. It was this revolutionary patience on behalfof the poor and oppressed that, humanly speaking, led to him being arrested, tried, tortured and executed by the powers that be. The acts of witness that resulted inthe fines I have refused to pay were a form of conscientious objection. Refusing topay them is a continuation of that objection. It is a privilege to be able tofollow on the path that led Jesus to the way of the cross and resurrection.
Fr. Newell is a member of the Passionist Order. He currently works with homelessrefugees at the London Catholic Worker, and is planning to move soon to start a newproject in Birmingham.

Martin Newell sent out the following report of the day's events:
It went very well at the MoD today. About 100 people for the liturgy, younger age profile than I've seen before, a good spread across the ages from young 20's up. Scott Albrecht marked the Old War Office, was arrested, taken to Charing Cross police station and bailed to return in May - I think it was the 14th. They will decide whether to charge Scott under Section 128 of SOCPA, concerning military establishments, and for criminal damage. For the Socpa charge they have to ask the Attorney General.Ray Towey marked the pillars and the main entrance to the MoD in the morning, I made a mark at the back at the end of the liturgy. Neither myself nor Ray was arrested.
The photo was taken by Father Joe Ryan. A longer report is here on the Pax Christi website.

On October 7th, three Catholic Workers were among the "Waddington 6" who were ontrial at Lincolnshire Magistrates Court. They were charged with criminal damage, forcutting the fence at RAF Waddington in June this year before exploring the base tolook for the drone control units. RAF Waddington is where UK armed drones arecontrolled from as they fly over and attach targets in Afghanistan.

The Judge found them guilty, "with a heavy heart" and encouraged them to appeal. Formore info see dronewars.net or Al Barrett's blog.

                                  REPORT
Wednesday June 19th marked a year since WikiLeaks editorJulian Assange entered the Ecuadorian embassy in London seeking sanctuary. TheEcuadorian government was immediately threatened in private correspondence fromBritish Foreign Minister Hague with the loss of diplomatic status and a consequentraid. The Ecuadorian government made the private threat public, held their groundand conducted an inquiry into the Assange case. This was the same government thathad previously responded to a U.S. request for a U.S. military base in Ecuador with,"if you let us have an Ecuadoran base in Florida?"

During this period of inquiry, the London Met were deployed in large numbersaround the embassy with 30 police stationed there 24/7. Anti-War, human rights,Latino, Veterans for Peace, Catholic Worker, Occupy & other activists maintained asolidarity vigil at the embassy. Following the completion of the Ecuadorian inquiryand the formal granting of asylum for Julian Assange in August 2012, the Met bobbiesleft to be replaced by 10 members of the Diplomatic Protection section of the Metand a police conference van permanently parked. This 24/7 police presence has beenmaintained for the past year at a cost of 4 million quid. On a significantly smallerbudget, a daily vigil of solidarity activists has been sustained (presently 4-6pm).

Sunday June 16th. 2013 was chosen as a time to mobilise as Ecuador'sForeign Minister Ricardo Patino was to visit Julian Assange before his meeting withBritish Foreign Minister William Hague the following day.

The first sight that greeted activists on exiting the Knighstbridgetube station was Sue & Roland's motor home transformedinto the "Free Tea, Free Assange" takeaway. The caboose was parked next toan exclusive Gran Cafe facing Harrods, serving folks throughout the afternoon. We started setting up banners and were soon joined by the Ecuadoriancommunity. Support grew to about 130+ by about 4pm. Word came through that theforeign minister had been delayed with an ETA of 6.30pm. We were blessed withfine weather and settled in for the duration. Fortunately, John McClean hadbrought his guitar! Songs alternated between an Aussie Kiwi combo and the Ecuadorian community.

In breaks between songs, media interviews were conducted and the Ecuadorian folksled us in chanting. At 6.30 the Ecuadorian foreign minister arrived waving to thecrowd and entered the embassy. Singing resumed and after a while curtains were drawnback and Ricardo Patino and Julian Assange appeared at the window of the embassy.Between us and them were the London Metropolitan Police, mainstream media and asealed U.S. Grand Jury indictment for the WikiLeaks founder.

In other places, Jeremy Hammond & Bradley Manning are already in chains,Edward Snowden is hotly pursued by the same powers. The courage of these people, the WikiLeaks crew and the Ecuadorian people inspires us all. Hopefully suchcourageous and solidarity is contagious. The world literally depends on itstransmission. If that sunny afternoon on a sidewalk in Knightsbride/ London with theEcuadorian community and friends is anything to go by, it's worth the effort.

For pics of the day from BradleyLibero here.

Six anti-drone protesters (myself included) were arrested inside RAF Waddington on Monday (June 3). The protest had three aims; 1) to symbolically breach the secrecy and silence surrounding the British use of armed drones; 2) to bring information about the impact of airstrikes on Afghan civilians and 3) to symbolically begin conversion of the air base to peaceful purposes. We did this by creating a peace garden within the base, displaying information on buildings, hangars and sign posts about the impact of airstrikes on Afghan civilians (see bottom of post) and trying to find out information about the day-to-day use of drones at Waddington.

We were detained by the police for over two hours before being processed. At this point we were told that we were being held incommunicado and not allowed a phone call to inform anyone of our arrests or to contact a solicitor. Unbeknown to us permission was being sort to gain entry to our houses in order to seize computers, mobile phones, diaries, and documents. In the afternoon we were each interviewed and told that we would be released and bailed pending further enquiries. By 10pm however it was becoming clear that we would be held overnight.
